Everywhere you turned during the tournament, what caught your eye was a sea of red, white and blue uniforms of the Nuons Karate Team, said Lesa Martin, mother of two participants. More than twenty Nuons Karate Team members participated in the tournament. Another fifty or so family members and friends dressed in matching black
and yellow Nuons Martial Arts t-shirts made the two-hour drive from Whitehouse to
support their school. Master Nuon really knows how to prepare his students for these
tournaments, Mrs. Martin added. Nuons Martial Arts was the only East Texas school
participating in the Texas Karate Heatwave.
Texas Karate Heatwave was the first North Region AOK tournament of the new 2006
season. Points were awarded to the 1st (12 points), 2nd (8 points), and two 3rd (6 points)
place winners. Points accumulated during the event count toward the state finals
competition at end of the year.
The Amateur Organization of Karate (AOK) is the largest and oldest martial arts
tournament sanctioning organization in the United States. It was founded in 1977 when a
group of tournament producers joined together in an effort to organize this fast growing
sport and to establish standards and rules. The AOK has since become a major force in
governing Texas karate tournaments. It has helped to ensure that competitors and
spectators alike have high quality, well run events, so the sport of karate can be safe and fun for students of all ages. For more information on Amateur Organization of Karate
(AOK), please visit: www.theaok.org
The AOK event was held for the first time at Kennemer Middle School, in the Dallas
suburb of Duncanville, TX. The excellent hard wood floors at the new venue made a
great competition surface for all martial artist participants.
