UPSCALE ASSISTED-LIVING CENTER BEING BUILT AT PALUXY DRIVE, ROY ROAD

The owners of a group of special needs homes will build a 50-unit, upscale assisted-living center at Paluxy Drive and Roy Road.

Kristy Redman, owner and chief executive officer, said she, her husband Brian Redman and Laura and Richard Redman will build Prestige Estates in the 7000 block of Paluxy Drive. Laura and Richard Redman own Community Access Inc., which has group homes for people with special needs in Tyler, Whitehouse, Greenville, Lubbock, Sherman and the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Ms. Redman said the project will probably represent a $5 million investment.

“We just wanted to take the vision and the care to a different level,” she said. “With Tyler being a certified retirement community, we wanted to be able to have a nice, upscale facility and offer services that the other assisted-living facilities may or may not currently provide.”

Prestige Estates will have a theater room, wireless Internet availability, a spacious dining room, laundry facilities, a beauty shop and a separate exercise and activity room, Ms. Redman said.

“We want to target the smaller communities and provide that family atmosphere,” she said. “We want it to be some place that you or I would want our parents to live.”

Residents would have individual rooms.

John O’Sullivan, construction manager, said the individual residences in the 40,000-square-foot building would consist of one- and two-bedroom apartments.

“We want to start construction in early 2006, and to have it completed in early 2007,” O’Sullivan said.

The project is scheduled for consideration by the Tyler Planning & Zoning Commission during a 9 a.m. meeting Wednesday in City Hall. Richard Redman requested zoning on the proposed 10-acre tract be changed from AG Agricultural District to R-3 Multi-Family Residential District to allow for the operation of an assisted-living center.
