Whitehouse Area Chamber of Commerce recognized its top citizen Tuesday night at its annual awards ceremony. Whitehouse High School Band Director Denny Whitley was honored as the Citizen of the Year.
He said he was “very humbled” by the award and gave credit to his students, noting that “they’re the ones that deserve this.”
Whitley has served as a band director for 35 years and has been with the Whitehouse ISD for 16 years.
Whitley said that the band currently has over 200 members grown from fewer than 50 members 16-years ago.
Whitehouse High School Principal Chris Moran said after the banquet that the school is proud of Whitley.
“Denny Whitley impacts so many lives in the community,” Moran said. “And the band program at Whitehouse has been so instrumental in fostering not only good students, but character. Danny Whitley has played a big part in that.”
